Ken Yang started studying piano with Meizhi Bi at the age of 8. After 2 years, he placed 3rd at the Canadian Music Competitions nationals held in Toronto. Aside from placing 1st at the CMC nationals in 2004, Ken has accumulated countless awards from local music competitions. He has played in masterclasses for Leon Fleisher, Jamie Parker, John Perry, Marc Durand, Lee Kum Sing, and Lang Lang, to name a few. He is an alumnus of the Morningside Music Bridge program in Calgary and Young Artists’ Performance Academy at the Glenn Gould School of Music, where he studied with James Anagnoson. Ken has enjoyed collaborations with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Recent choral engagements include performances of Mozart’s Magic Flute and Bach’s B minor Mass as part of collaborations between the TSO and the University of Toronto Macmillan Singers. In 2009, he was awarded the University of Toronto Excellence Award by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Ken is in his fourth year of studies at the university, where he divides his time between the Music and Psychology departments.

For the first time in history the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra will travel to Canada. 90 talented musicians will take the stage at Roy Thomson Hall with the sound of over 30 types of traditional Chinese music instruments in the symphonic orchestra.
Congratulations to Amely 周嘉丽 for placing first in the Kiwanis Music Festival. Her entry was for erhu in the non-Western, bowed string open class. She will be performing the award winning work Sanmen Gorge Rhapsody 三門峽暢想曲 at our May 15, 2010 concert.
